Hotel Rwanda gets its first casino

Posted on October 16, 2008 - Filed Under Gambling News

The name Rwanda must be fresh in your mind; if not then you haven’t seen the movies, Hotel Rwanda or Sometimes in April.

Rwanda is back in the news and there is no need to get alarmed this time. Rwanda is in news because of its decision to join the league of Las Vegas and Macau.

Though not half as ambitious as any Macau or Las Vegas casino can be, Rwanda decided to take a baby-step and gave a green signal to open its first casino.

The casino will begin its operation from 21st of October and the name chosen for this casino is Casino Kigali. Casino Kigali will run its operation from the first floor of a newly opened, Kacyiru-based Top Tower Hotel.

Lotto Rwanda, a national lottery firm will be operating this business. Philip Brizoua, Director General of Lotto Rwanda is seeing this step as a visible cue of change in the Rwandan environment.

To cater to the changing mood, Lotto Rwanda is contemplating several small and big innovations.

Installing Video gaming facilities in bars, nightclubs and restaurants are some of the changes that Mr. Brizoua is planning to bring in the city’s entertainment space.

The owners of these places will work as Lotto Rwanda’s franchisees and will get commission for the sale they’ll generate.

As said by the officials, Casino Kigali got certified by an international accounting and consultation firm, though the name of the firm was not disclosed.

A weekly jackpot is also in the menu and the lucky winner of the jackpot will get Frw30 million ($54419.60) as the prize money.

After 14 years of the genocide, Rwanda is moving towards this new way of life. Philip Brizoua of Lotto Rwanda believes these changes will stabilize the Rwandan economy.

Will counting till 21 stabilize the economy or not? The question can only be answered in the hindsight. For now, deck has been shuffled and the ace of spade is on the dealer’s side.
