Harrah’s Entertainment Inc. has taken back its proposition of opening a state-owned casino in the county of Sumner. This has left only two casino companies compete for their casino business in Kansas. It has been said by the Kansas Lottery that on Monday they received the news regarding the withdrawal plan of Harrah’s.
The Sumner Gaming Joint Venture, which happens to be a joint partnership between a group of investors in Kansas and Harrah’s Entertainment Inc., declared to drop their plan of pursuing a license for managing a $535 million project in Mulvane’s south-central town.
Harrah’s said that it is the ongoing problem in the financial market that has prompted them to take this decision. It is almost impossible for them to go forward with this plan any more. However, it has also been said by both the parties that they will be looking out for alternatives for the Mulvane casino proposal.
However, this is only possible when the financial market regains its stability. Executive Director of Kansas Lottery, Ed Van Petten said that he is highly disappointed for this sudden withdrawal of Harrah’s. Nevertheless, he has also said that their decision will be given due respect.
The remaining two competitors are Butler National Service Corp. that is planning to open a casino in Ford County and the other is a partnership of Baltimore-based Cordish Co. and Kansas Speedway. The latter is planning to manage gambling in Wyandotte County.
Both of them stick to their plan of moving forward with their respective plans in Kansas. By next month, the final decision is likely to be given by the Kansas Racing and Gaming Commission. The commission is going to take up the formality of eliminating Harrah’s in a bid to welcome new application.
The Kansas Lottery will be returning $25 million privilege fee that was paid by Harrah’s when selected for the project of Sumner County. Those who applied earlier will be probably looking forward to applying afresh. These applications in all likelihood will have a 90 days application period.
The Kansas Lottery has laid a deadline on January 21 for all the Southeast Zone new applications. This also takes into account the Crawford County.
